Whether you are a student, are just starting your career or have many years of experience in the workforce, you will be faced with challenges and questions that can’t always be answered by Google. Gain from another Djøf member’s knowledge and experience and from the shortcuts and detours a mentor has taken during the course of their career.  

How can I use a mentor?

A mentor is an extra pair of eyes observing your career, your studies or perhaps your search for a job. You will meet with a confidante who can view your challenges from different angles. Hearing about a mentor’s experiences of finding their way through their studies and the various stages of their career can be very helpful. Together, you will explore the challenges and strike new paths to give you a stronger platform and help you reach your goals.

Mentee and mentor – roles and responsibilities

In the Djøf mentor programme, the mentor’s role is to be a neutral and competent sounding board, as well as a professional friend in the mentee’s study and work life. The key qualities of a mentor are to listen, ask challenging questions and bring their knowledge and experience to bear. As a mentee, it is you who must take the initiative for the meetings with your mentor. You set the agenda for the meetings. And it is up to you to take action on the learnings and insights you gain from your talks.

What qualifications should a mentor have?

Djøf mentors are volunteers. Generally, a mentor is motivated by observing and supporting a mentee’s development and endeavours to achieve new goals. Be prepared to have a mentor with a different educational and professional background from you. In our experience, this usually provides great mutual inspiration.  

May I speak English?

Yes, we have mentors who can speak with you in English.

Become a mentor

Whatever the stage of your career, you have something valuable to share. As a mentor, you can lend your experience to someone who is newer to the job market than you are. This allows others to benefit from the paths, shortcuts and detours you have taken in your career.  

Why become a mentor?

It increases your self-awareness, develops your communication skills and makes a difference to others. Being a mentor is a rewarding and enlightening experience that gives you a better understanding of yourself and your own actions. As a Djøf volunteer mentor, you will be part of a strong network with more than 800 members.  

Your role as mentor

In the Djøf mentor programme, your role is to be a neutral and competent sounding board, as well as a professional friend in your mentee’s work life. The key qualities of a mentor are to listen, ask challenging questions and bring knowledge and experience to bear. The mentee’s wishes and issues are always centre stage. It is the mentee who takes the initiative for meetings with a mentor and sets the agenda for what you will discuss at the meeting.
